FAIRMONT, W.Va (WDTV) – A Marion County student was represented at the state-wide Poetry Out Loud competition in Charleston this weekend.

Riley Moore, a 12th grader at Fairmont Senior High School, recited works by Edna St. Vincent Millay, Deborah A Miranda, and William Wordsworth.

According to the official Poetry Out Loud website: Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering free educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition for high school students across the country. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life.

Moore, who is also very active in theatre, said that participating in the competition was a great way for her to learn new skills.

The competition was held at the Culture Center on the grounds of the State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The event kicked off Friday March 8th and concluded on Saturday, March 9th.
