Welsh Labour is facing demands to recall the Senedd as it tries to install a new First Minister over the summer recess to avoid a damaging leadership election.

Welsh Cabinet Secretary for Health Eluned Morgan appears set to replace scandal-plagued Vaughan Gething after he lasted just four months.

The peer is running as a ‘unity candidate’ and has won the backing of Jeremy Miles, who narrowly lost to Mr Gething in February. 

Installing Baroness Morgan would allow the new Welsh Labour leader to be unveiled quickly. If she succeeds she will be the first female leader of Wales.

But to become First Minister they also have to win a vote by the Senedd. The authority in Cardiff broke up for the summer last Friday and is not due to return until September 16 after a break of 55 days.
