New York’s Medicaid enrollment declined by nearly 50,000 people in the span of just one month this year.
The state’s total Medicaid enrollment was roughly 6.05 million in July, but a month later, New York recorded only around 6 million, showing a net loss of around 50,000, according to Data.Medicaid.gov.
“The drop we’re seeing in New York is similar to some other states, and while it’s not exactly clear the exact reasons for the falloff in enrollment, we know some of it goes back to the continuous enrollment enacted during the pandemic,” Alex Beene, a financial literacy instructor for the University of Tennessee at Martin, told Newsweek.
In April 2023, states began ending continuous enrollment for Medicaid, which became law during the coronavirus pandemic to prevent Americans from losing health care during that time.
