IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – The Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity has built over 30 homes in the neighborhood off Blazing Star Drive in Iowa City.
On Saturday it broke ground on the next one, for a Habitat volunteer and his family of five.
“It’s our chance now to own a home through Habitat and just our pleasure for our family to have a home,” Nagi Hassanin said.
The house is Habitat’s Women Build where ladies do most of the work to build it. The group builds one house per year and honors a female leader in the community. This year’s honoree is Billie Townsend.
“This has been the best experience with some of the fiercest women I have ever met in my life,” Townsend said.
Townsend serves on Iowa City’s Planning and Zoning Commission and says affordable housing is still a problem for the city.
