Debunking Bias: Perceptions of Male and Female Leaders | Shawn Andrews | TEDxUCIrvine

In this TEDx talk, Dr. Shawn Andrews focuses on the perceptions (and misperceptions) of male and female leaders which are often rooted in bias.

She starts off by playing the drums and shares a personal story about bias as a female drummer. She talks about the power of bias and how it contributes to the leadership gender gap, sharing the latest statistics.

We then explore emotional intelligence (EQ) from a gendered perspective, and she shares real stories of women’s experiences of bias based on their EQ.

As professor of a “Women & Leadership” course at UC Irvine, she shares her student’s eye-opening perceptions of male and female leaders based on a white board exercise in class and points out specific patterns.

She challenges the audience to “Imagine if we perceived male and female leaders the same without biases and stereotypes. How would our companies, societies, and world be different?”

Dr. Andrews shares an inspiring story about Sam and points out that the best leaders both use and value male and female strengths.

Finally, she leaves the audience with three strategies they can apply to redefine what leadership can and should be, and how we can debunk bias together. Shawn speaks and consults to a diverse range of clients, including the United Nations, Johnson and Johnson, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Broadcom, Experian, National Diversity Council, Association for Talent Development, and Society for Human Resource Management.
With over two decades of corporate experience in the biopharmaceutical industry, she has helped thousands of leaders improve and develop using presentations, workshops, coaching, and psychological instruments.
She serves as a professor at both UC Irvine and Pepperdine University Business Schools, teaching courses on Women and Leadership and Organizational Behavior. Her specific areas of focus include Leadership and Gender, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Unconscious Bias, and Emotional Intelligence.
She serves as Board President, Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association Orange County, is a member of 50/50 Women on Boards Leadership Committee, and is founder and CEO of Andrews Research International. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
