CALERA, Ala. (WBRC) – Calera police officers participated in their annual active shooter response training this week to keep your children safe at school.
The key is to get all the officers trained and build the confidence needed to stop the threat as quickly as possible.
“We use these plastic bullets that actually hurt and it’s as realistic as we can get to simulating an actual event,” said Chief David Hyche.
They do this to help the officers build self-confidence so in a real-life situation, they know they can respond quickly and take out the threat.
During the school year, they ask all their officers whether they be admin, patrol or investigators to stop by a school randomly every day.
“So if somebody comes into one of our schools intending to do harm, they don’t know if they are going to be facing one officer or 12,” Hyche said.
