Did you make any New Year’s resolutions? It’s the perfect time to add some financial goals that can set you up for success this year.

Most financial resolutions fall into three broad categories: saving more, paying down debt and spending less. The key is turning those broad objectives into specific, measurable actions, according to Jill Schlesinger, CBS News business analyst.

“So instead of saying save more, it might be, ‘Hey, I’m going to put an extra 1% into my company retirement plan. Or maybe I’m going to put an extra $25 per pay period into my emergency reserve fund,'” Schlesinger told KCBS Radio. “Concrete is the way to try to actually reach a goal as opposed to this amorphous, ‘I’m going to be better with my money and save more.’ That’s kind of meaningless.”
