Imagine you accidentally achieve FIRE (financial independence, retire early) with a savings rate of just twenty percent. That’s right—not a fifty or seventy or eighty percent savings rate—twenty percent. Darren and Jolene did exactly that, reaching early retirement in their late forties after not even thinking about financial independence for most of their working careers. In fact, they only found out they were FI months before quitting their jobs. Pretty sweet, right?

But, in order to achieve FIRE in their forties and travel the world every year, they needed to make some changes, reducing their housing costs and health insurance premiums while still living comfortably.
