Pennsylvanians Rush to Get Tax Rebate for Housing [Video]

More than 100,000 first-time applicants have submitted their forms for a rebate in Pennsylvania after Governor Josh Shapiro expanded the longstanding program last year.

Shapiro announced the additional applications this month, revealing that more seniors and residents with disabilities will likely earn the $1,000 check in Pennsylvania. The Property Tax/Rent Rebate was expanded so that those outside of the previous income requirements could still earn the money.

“One of the biggest pitfalls in prior years has been simply getting people who qualify to apply,” Alex Beene, a financial literacy instructor for the University of Tennessee at Martin, told Newsweek.

“While there have been expansions of who can qualify for the rebate, that widening equates to little if people don’t fill out an application. What we’ve noticed this time around is the state making a large push for those eligible to apply, and many residents, who are struggling with rising costs, taking them up on the offer.”
